Jensen Ackles (Supernatural, Smallville) will be joining the upcoming third season of Amazon’s subversive superhero show The Boys. Ahead of the series’ second season premiere on September 4, Amazon has just released an announcement on the casting role–Ackles will be portraying Soldier Boy, “the original superhero.”

In the release, showrunner and executive producer Eric Kripke offers one of the more memorable statements to grace a promotional announcement: “When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream–to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment. I’m happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother. As Soldier Boy, the very first superhero, he’ll bring so much humor, pathos, and danger to the role. I can’t wait to be on set with him again, and bring a bit of Supernatural to The Boys.” Ackles’ much less verbose announcement (he doesn’t say a single word, but gives a knowing glance) was posted to Instagram.

In the comics, the Soldier Boy character is a parody of Captain America who has supposedly served in World War II and fought Nazis. His heroism is consistently doubted or openly mocked, often played as a running gag throughout the series.

The show’s third season was announced during its San-Diego Comic-Con@Home panel on July 23. After debuting on September 4 with three new episodes, The Boys’ second season will air weekly on Amazon Video through to October 9.

The Boys stars Jack Quaid, Laz Alonso, Timer Capon, Karen Fukuhara, and Antony Starr. Adapted from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s mid-aughts comic books, as in the source material, the show follows a team of vigilantes who fight back against people with superpowers who abuse their abilities.
